Purpose
The UC Merced Community and Labor Graduate Fellowship is designed to support labor research and education in the San Joaquin Valley.
The Community and Labor Fellow will be placed with the UC Merced Community and Labor Center. The fellow will contribute research, education and public service on major center projects.
The fellowship is designed to financially support PhD graduate students with extensive experience in applied labor research. The fellowship will allow recipients to conduct valuable research and service, while pursuing their graduate degree and career goals.
The award is based on applied labor research experience, particularly in the center’s major areas of immigration, rural work, occupational health, and economic development.
This fellowship is available to all California residents. It is renewable for up to five years total for each recipient.

1. All nominees must be Ph.D. applicants entering their first year of graduate study
2. Good academic standing
3. Experience in applied labor research
Support
Recipients will receive a fellowship of $42,000, paid monthly over a twelve-month academic year period plus payment of Graduate Fees (Resident Tuition, Non-Resident Supplemental Tuition (if applicable), Student Services Fee and Health Services Fee), in their first year of study, with the possibility of renewal.
Review Procedures
Any applicant meeting the criteria above is eligible; applicants must apply directly to the UC Merced Community and Labor Center.
Applications will be reviewed in a multi-stage process. In the first stage, the center faculty director (or an administrative staff person) will review all applications and determine which applications meet eligibility requirements. In the second stage, applications that meet eligibility criteria will be forwarded to a review committee comprised of the center's academic appointees. The review committee will score applications and make recommendations. Criteria will include the applicant's alignment with the purpose of the fellowship, the center's major areas, and experience in the field of labor. In the third and final stage, applications will be forwarded to the center's Executive Director, who will make final award decisions.
